Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of the arts by her aunt Denise when she was a kid. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, allowed her to pursue art literature and the theatre in daylight. DuVernay instantly became enthralled when she showed her an old 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay learned that art can be a powerful vehicle for activism. DuVernay learned to be socially mindful by her mother. DuVernay was born in Compton by her parents, however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father has lived for many generations. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the Civil Rights movement's historic march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. DuVernay used her summers in Alabama to help inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay started producing in broadcast journalism when she was still at the college. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was tasked to watch and search the home of an individual member of the Jury. Due to her work, she became dissatisfied with journalism and moved into the public relations industry. DuVernay started her career as a junior public relations assistant for a film studio that was small, right after graduating from the college. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. Neben PR, her agency has created lifestyle networks and advertising campaigns such as The Urban Beauty Collective.
